                  Spider (25" x 33", oil on canvas) -
Among all the insects and other arthropods that
Mary liked, spiders occupied a special
place.  She loved their graceful movements
and varieties of body forms, and most of all, the
beautiful webs they wove.  In more than one
painting she used real cobwebs as collage
material.  This spider is peacefully still -
possibly dead? - on a dreamy background of the
type found in many of Mary's paintings from the
                  mid 1960s.
