Burro with Crosses -
"This was on a trip south [in Mexico]. Mary
Elmendorf took us, and she was pointing out a lot of Christian
symbolism that was mixed with the Indian symbolism. The
Indian symbolism always had seven crosses, and their crosses
are a different shape. See, you really couldn't crucify
somebody on that... But there was a lonely sort of desolation,
and such an earthy feeling that the little burro appealed to
me. Just a connection again."
